Mead-halls of Middle-earth[English]

Tolkien based Beorn’s and King Theoden’s mead halls on a type of building that recurs in Old English and Old Norse literature. Archaeologists discovered in the mid-20th century that the literary mead hall is actually an accurate description of a real-world type of wooden building. None survive as standing structures. But decades of research have produced increasingly refined methods of finding and characterising the mead halls of forgotten petty kings around Northern Europe. Lord Arador gives an introduction to this field of research with recent examples from the area around Linköping and Norrköping.

Three Gems: A showcase of three annotation projects at the Digital Tolkien Project [English]

Presentation by James Tauber

One of the objectives of the Digital Tolkien Project is the rich annotation of Tolkien’s texts in electronic formats that ensure consistency, encourage collaboration and reuse, and enable new research questions to be explored. This talk will explore one recent and two ongoing annotation projects that demonstrate this. Firstly, annotation of the Council of Elrond to study the particular way in which Tolkien structures the presentation of speech for pacing and dramatic purposes. Secondly, the annotation of characters, location, and times in The Lord of the Rings being undertaken by a small team using custom software. Thirdly, the annotation of distinct text types in The History of Middle-earth to distinguish extended texts, textual variations, and commentary in order to enable more powerful search and richer presentation of the material.
